Interfaith Prayer Service on Zoom, Tues, Nov 12th at 12:15 PM for the 30 People "Without Fixed Abode" who died in Oct 2021 in OC

All are invited to a Zoom Interfaith Memorial Prayer Service on Tuesday, Nov 23th at 12:15 PM for the 30 people who died "Without Fixed Abode" in OC in Oct, 2024.  Additionally, three others who died in previous months but whose cases were recorded in the OC Coroner's list only this month.

For the year, 319 people have died in OC "without fixed abode."  The number is significantly lower than in the previous two years (2022 and 2023), when 398 and 433 deaths of people who died "without fixed abode" had been reported in the County by this time of year, though still similar to the 321 deaths reported in 2021 [1].

However, as we approach the end of the year, another trend seems to be apparent: A number of cities which in previous years had reported significant numbers of homeless deaths, this year have been reporting far lower numbers.

While it is possible that the numbers are lower because of the wide distribution of anti-opioid overdose medicine Narcan, it can also mean that these cities have either reclassified the people who had died "without fixed abode" in their communities or for whatever reason they have been listed as having died elsewhere.

The communities reporting markedly lower homeless death rates than in previous years are: Cypress, Fountain Vally, Fullerton, La Habra, New Port Beach, Placentia and San Clemente [2].

Two years ago there was a commission chaired by OC Sheriff Barnes empaneled to report on the causes of the then steep increase in homeless deaths reported in O.C.  It would certainly be worth the while to call back the commission to report on this year's decrease in homeless deaths and why some cities reported really remarkable decreases in the homeless deaths in their communities, if for no other reason to underline what these communities had done well so that other communities, even across the country could do the same.

In any case, we have 30 people who had died last month in the County without fixed abode, nearly one a day.  And so we pray for them and the others continuing to languish on our streets and in our shelters ...
