St. Philip Benizi - Our Pastoral Adaptations in Light of Governor's Latest, July 13, Shut Down Order

Dear Parishioners,

In light of Governor Newsom’s new but not altogether unexpected July 13^th shut-down order, and subsequent instructions received from the Diocese, our Staff met on the afternoon of July 14^th to draw-up our Parish response to this new situation.  This is what we decided:

FIRST, WITH REGARD TO THE CELEBRATION OF MASS / RECEPTION OF COMMUNION:

We will largely go back to our schedule and practice which served our Parish well during the previous “shelter at home” order.  That is, we will be livestreaming most of our English Masses from our “Chapel of Undisclosed Location,” and our Spanish Masses from Friars’ Residence according to the following schedule:

Weekday Masses –

8:30 AM daily in English,

6:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays in Spanish

Sunday Masses –

5 PM Sat Vigil Mass and 8:30 AM Mass in English,

12:30 PM in Spanish

with the following SIGNIFICANT NEW ADDITION:

We will offer our Parishioners the OPPORTUNITY TO RECEIVE COMMUNION each Sunday at 10 AM in the Court Yard of our School by an altar that we will set up by the Statue of St. Joseph.  There will be an abbreviated but dignified Communion Service held prior to the distribution of Communion.

We will ask parishioners to enter through the Entrance to the Court Yard by the Faith Formation Office and after receiving communion, leave the Court Yard through the Exit by the Parish Office.   Opportunity to leave a donation at the Parish Office will, of course, be available, as would mailing it in, or continuing to take advantage of our system for electronic giving.

We have decided on approach rather than start celebrating public Masses outdoors out of concern for the health and safety of our most devout parishioners / volunteers as well as for the dignity of the Sacrament Received.  To celebrate Mass outdoors would require much more than “the simple celebration of the Mass” but movement outdoors of the materials as well as sound and now AV equipment to do so and then bringing all those materials / equipment back indoors after all is finished, and doing all this during the hottest time of the year.

By our approach we allow our parishioners the opportunity to continue to hear / participate in the live-streamed Masses, and also allow them to receive Communion in a dignified way that does not put their lives / health in danger.

FURTHER OUR MINISTRIES OLD / NEW WILL CONTINUE

Our popular virtual music ministry offered by James Post from home / his studio as well as Jose Mesa and his group, now singing outdoors from our Plaza of the Holy Spirit, are continuing as well as the truly lovely CHILDREN’S STORY TELLING MINISTRY offered by Angelica and Miguel Reygoza on Tuesdays and Thursday on Facebook.  Gloria Wheeler is continuing with her blog, newest update coming soon!  Marivel Alvarado, our new Coordinator for Faith Formation continues to offer some very good information about civic involvement in our neighborhood.  Fill out your census forms folks!  The SVdP Society continues to provide food for 30-40 families each Tuesday and Thursday Mornings.  Diana Trout, our Confirmation and Youth Director continues to imaginatively engage our teens each and every week.  A lot is going on!

FINALLY A WORD ON SACRAMENTS

Our FF / Liturgy team also met yesterday, July 14, with regards to celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: 

FIRST COMMUNIONS -- With few modifications that the parents of our first communion children have been informed of (no further instructions are necessary to give here) we have decided to complete our cycle of celebration of First Communion Masses scheduled for this Saturday and the next.

RCIA / ADULT SACRAMENTS – We have petitioned the Bishop for faculties to celebrate RCIA / Adult Sacraments for the weekend of August 14-15 (around the Feast of the Assumption of Mary).  These are celebrations that are a month away.  We believe that there is good reason to hope that the current shut-down order will be lifted by then.  Our FF/Liturgy Team will meet again around August 1^st to see how things look, and make adjustments as needed, including our plans for the weekend of Aug 14-15 by a month or so, if needed.

CONFIRMATION – We have petitioned the Bishop to celebrate Confirmation for our Teen Candidates on either Monday, Sept 14^th (the Vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Principal Patroness of our Servite Order) or Friday, Oct 2^nd (on the Feast of the Guardian Angels).  Either restrictions on celebrations in the Church will be lifted to celebrate the Mass inside the Church, or if not, this Mass we will celebrate with High Solemnity and Dignity outdoors.  We will let the Teens, their Sponsors and Parents of the Date chosen by the Bishop (if he chooses to com) or his delegation of the celebration of this sacrament to us, when we get word.

CONCLUSION

So all in all dear Parishioners, as the Elton John song goes “We’re still standing” and I want to express my gratitude to the Staff and to you for your continued strength, patience and support during these challenging times.  Despite everything, we are moving forward and even the issues with the Wifi / Sound in the Church are being worked on as all is now closed again.  See, EVERYTHING can be turned into a blessing!  May God bless you all, and what a wonderful Parish we have!

"Dichosos los sufridos porque ellos heredarán la tierra", Mt 5: 5

Queridos feligreses,

A la luz de la nueva, pero no completamente inesperada “Orden de Cerrar” del 13 de julio del Gobernador Newsom, y las instrucciones posteriores recibidas de la Diócesis, nuestro personal se reunió en la tarde del 14 de julio para elaborar un plan para responder a esta nueva situación. Esto es lo que decidimos:

PRIMERO, CON RESPECTO A LA CELEBRACIÓN DE LA MISA / RECEPCIÓN DE COMUNIÓN:

Volveremos en gran parte a nuestro horario y práctica que nos sirvió bien a nuestra parroquia durante la previa orden a "quedarse en casa.”  Es decir, transmitiremos en vivo la mayoría de nuestras misas celebradas en inglés desde nuestra "Capilla Escondida" y nuestras misas celebrada en español desde la Casa de los Frailes de acuerdo con el siguiente horario:

Misas de la semana

8:30 AM diariamente en inglés,

6:30 PM martes y jueves en español

Misas dominicales

Misa de la vigilia del sábado a las 5 PM y 8:30 en ingles

12:30 PM en español

con la siguiente NUEVA ADICION SIGNIFICATIVA:

Ofreceremos a nuestros feligreses la OPORTUNIDAD DE RECIBIR LA COMUNIÓN todos los domingos a las 10 AM, en el patio de nuestra escuela junto a un altar que colocaremos frente de la estatua de San José. Habrá una liturgia de comunión, corta pero digna, bilingüe, antes de la distribución de la comunión.

Les pediremos a los feligreses que entren por la entrada del patio al lado de la oficina de formación de fe y después de recibir la comunión, que salgan del patio por la salida al lado de la oficina parroquial.  Por supuesto, oportunidad de dejar una donación a la oficina parroquial, estará disponible, como enviarla por correo, o aprovechar nuestra sistema donaciones electrónicas.

Hemos decidido a ofrecer esta manera de recibir la comunión a ustedes a en lugar de comenzar a celebrar Misas públicas al aire libre por preocupación por la salud y la seguridad de nuestros feligreses / voluntarios más devotos, así como por la dignidad del Sacramento celebrado y recibido.  Para celebrar la misa al aire libre, se requeriría mucho más que "la simple celebración de la misa", sino el movimiento al aire libre de los materiales, así como el sonido y ahora el equipo audiovisual para hacerlo y luego traer todos esos materiales / equipos nuevamente adentro cuando todo haya terminado, y haciendo todo esto durante la temporada más soleada y calorosa del año.

Pues pensamos sinceramente que nuestro método es mejor: les da a nuestros feligreses la oportunidad de continuar escuchando / participando en las Misas transmitidas en vivo, y les da la oportunidad de recibir la Comunión de una manera digna que no ponga en peligro su vida / salud.

ADEMÁS NUESTROS MINISTERIOS ANTIGUOS / NUEVOS CONTINUARÁN

Nuestros ministerios bien recibidos de música virtual ofrecidos por James Post desde su casa / su estudio, así como José Mesa y su grupo, que ahora cantan al aire libre desde nuestra Placita del Espíritu Santo, continúan, así como el verdaderamente encantador MINISTERIO DE LEER CUENTOS PARA LOS NIÑOS ofrecido por Angelica y Miguel Raygoza los martes y jueves en Facebook.  Gloria Wheeler continúa con su blog, ¡la última actualización llegará pronto! Marivel Alvarado, nuestra nueva Coordinadora para la Formación en la Fe, continúa ofreciendo informes muy importantes sobre oportunidades a participar en varias actividades y programas importantes en nuestro vecindario. ¡Completen sus formularios de censo!  La Sociedad SVdP continúa proporcionando alimentos a 30-40 familias cada martes y jueves por la mañana. Diana Trout, nuestra Directora de Confirmación y Jovenes, continúa imaginativamente involucrando a nuestros adolescentes cada semana. Pues ¡mucho está pasando en nuestra parroquia!

FINALMENTE UNA PALABRA SOBRE SACRAMENTOS

Nuestro equipo de FF / Liturgia también se reunió ayer, 14 de julio, y decidió con respecto a la celebración de los Sacramentos de Iniciación:

PRIMERAS COMUNIONES - Con muy pocas modificaciones de las que los padres de nuestros niños de la primera comunión han sido informados (no se necesito ofrecer más instrucciones aquí) hemos decidido seguir adelante para completar nuestro ciclo de celebración de las Misas de la Primera Comunión programadas para este sábado y el próximo.

SACRAMENTOS DE RICA / ADULTOS - Hemos solicitado al Obispo por facultades para celebrar del RICA y de los Sacramentos para los Adultos para el fin de semana del 14 al 15 de agosto (alrededor de la Fiesta de la Asunción de María). Estas son celebraciones que faltan un mes. Creemos que hay buenas razones para esperar que la orden de cierre actual se levante para entonces. Nuestro equipo de FF / Liturgia se reunirá nuevamente alrededor del 1 de agosto para ver cómo se ven las cosas y hacer los ajustes necesarios, incluidos a mover nuestros planes para el fin de semana del 14 al 15 de agosto por un mes, si sea necesario.

CONFIRMACIÓN -- Hemos solicitado al Obispo que celebre la Confirmación para nuestros Candidatos Adolescentes ya sea el lunes 14 de septiembre (la Vigilia de la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, la Patrona Principal de nuestra Orden Servita) o el viernes 2 de octubre (la Fiesta de los Ángeles Custodios).  Si las restricciones a las celebraciones en la Iglesia se levantarán para celebrar la Misa dentro de la Iglesia la celebramos allí, o si no, la celebraremos con gran solemnidad y dignidad al aire libre. Dejaremos saber a los adolescentes, a sus padres y sus padrinos de la fecha elegida por el Obispo (si así lo desea) o de su delegación de la celebración de este sacramento para nosotros, cuando tengamos noticias.

EN CONCLUSIÓN

Así ven, queridos feligreses, como suena la canción de Elton John "Todavía quedamos de pie" y deseo expresar mi gratitud al personal y a ustedes por su continua fortaleza, paciencia y apoyo durante estos tiempos difíciles. A pesar de todo, estamos avanzando e incluso estamos trabajando a resolver los problemas con el Wifi / sonido en la Iglesia durante este tiempo. ¡Miren, como TODO se puede convertir en una bendición! ¡Que Dios los bendiga a todos, y qué maravillosa parroquia tenemos!
