St Philip Benizi Parish will start celebrating Mass Outdoors this Weekend -- Sat/Sun July 25-26

[Español] July 23, 2020 Dear Parishioners, Listening to feedback, learning a number of things from our experience of last week, and thoroughly discussing the options as staff, we’ve come up with the following mixed approach offering (1) public Mass outside at times when it is comfortable to be outdoors and (2) the opportunity to simply receive Communion when it is not (with the promise that recipients would participate in a Mass livestreamed by us or livestreamed/broadcast elsewhere sometime during the day): As such our Sunday Service Schedule will be: Saturday, 6:30 PM – Public Mass in English Outside in the School Courtyard by the Statue of St. Joseph (livestreamed as well).  Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs.  Sunday, 8:00 AM – Public Mass in English Outside in the School Courtyard by the Statue of St. Joseph (live streamed as well).  Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs. Sunday, 10:00-10:30 AM – Opportunity to receive Holy Communion at the

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene -- two excellent recent portrayals of her in film

Hi folks,  Two recent movie portrayals of St. Mary Magdalene which I believe got it right.  Resisting the temptation to sexualize her -- either as some sort of a "recovering slut" (perhaps the most famous person to be "slut shamed" in early history) or conversely as, "nudge, nudge Jesus' wife" or "girlfriend" -- both focused on her as simply a committed and trusted disciple of Jesus, who (in the second movie) as a woman, did, in fact, have an insight into him that the men around him did not: The Roma Downey (of Touched by an Angel [1994-2003]  TV series fame) produced movie Son of God [2014] on Amazon Prime Video The Rooney Mara (of  The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo [2011]  fame) starring movie Mary Magdalene [2018] on Showtime but also available (to buy) on Amazon Prime Video (a little expensive, for a streaming item, but IMHO worth it ... if you went to the movies, you'd certainly pay more...). I think of SO MA

[Español] July 15, 2020 “Blessed are the humble for they shall inherit the earth”  -- Mt 5:5 Dear Parishioners, In light of Governor Newsom’s new but not altogether unexpected July 13 th shut-down order, and subsequent instructions received from the Diocese, our Staff met on the afternoon of July 14 th to draw-up our Parish response to this new situation.   This is what we decided: FIRST, WITH REGARD TO THE CELEBRATION OF MASS / RECEPTION OF COMMUNION: We will largely go back to our schedule and practice which served our Parish well during the previous “shelter at home” order.   That is, we will be livestreaming most of our English Masses from our “Chapel of Undisclosed Location,” and our Spanish Masses from Friars’ Residence according to the following schedule: Weekday Masses – 8:30 AM daily in English, 6:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays in Spanish Sunday Masses – 5 PM Sat Vigil Mass and 8:30 AM Mass in English, 12:30 P
