Interfaith Prayer Service on Zoom, Tues, Mar. 14th at 12:15 PM for the 44 People "Without Fixed Abode" who died in Feb 2023 in OC

 

All are invited to a Zoom Interfaith Memorial Prayer Service on Tuesday,  March 14th at 12:15 PM for the 44 people who died "Without Fixed Abode" in OC in February, 2023 and the 1 other person who had died in January, 2023 but had still gone unrecorded last month.   Zoom info below.

The 44 people who died “without fixed abode” in February, help make already homeless deaths for the year, the same number as last year but more than 2.7X that in 2019. 

In response to the clear increase in homeless deaths in recent years, the County released its findings on the causes of the increase. 

Yes, fentanyl was found to be related to 144 of the 395 homeless deaths in 2021.

Surprisingly, however, the effects of petty incarceration were found to be even more deadly: 262 of the 395 people who had died homeless in OC in 2021 had been incarcerated but for less than one month, 168 of those who had died in 2021 had been incarcerated for less than one week, and 75 (more than 1/2 of fentanyl's homeless death total) had been incarcerated for less than one day (!). 

So there is much to pray and reflect about this month...

Interfaith Prayer Service on Zoom, Tues, April 9th at 12:15 PM for the 38 People "Without Fixed Abode" who died in March 2024 in OC

  All are invited to a Zoom Interfaith Memorial Prayer Service on Tuesday, April 9th at 12:15 PM for the 33 people who died "Without Fixed Abode" in OC in March, 2024 as well as the 1 other who died in January, but whose death was recorded only now.  Zoom  info below. The death count for the first three months of the year stands at 120, last year (2023) it stood at 151, two years ago (2022) it was 123.  So it remains an improvement over last year.  However, in the years prior, the death rate was significantly lower still 100 for 2021, 66 for 2020, 52 for 2019.  During the same period of time, by the federally mandated PIT counts, the number of people who found themselves homeless was about the same or higher than it is now.  So despite declining from last year, the death rate among those who find themselves homeless in OC remains higher than it was in the recent past.
