CALIFORNIA CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS RESPOND TO THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD

CALIFORNIA CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS RESPOND TO THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD The following message is sent on behalf of Bishop Timothy Freyer. Dear Fathers, The bishops of California have been working on a response to the death of George Floyd and the ongoing racism within our country. Tentatively, there is a three phase response: 1. Votive Mass on June 9, the day of the funeral for George Floyd. We are encouraged to offer a votive Mass on this day. The Mass could include the following: From the Missal, "The Preservation of Peace and Justice" (#30A) From the Lectionary: Mass for Peace and Justice (#14) First Reading: Second Option (Isiah 32:15 18) Responsorial:First Option (Psalm 72) Second Reading: Third Option (James3:13-18) Alleluia: # 1(Matt 5:9) Gospel: First Option (Matt: 5:1-12a) In place of the homily: 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence and silent reflection and pray. 2. A video on June 17th (the 5th anniversary of the massacre in Charleston, SC) of the Stations of the Cross: Overcoming Racism. The stations will be led from the different (arch)dioceses of the California. 3. Implementation of an educational piece of racism. Thank you for your willingness to pray for an end to racism,
Bishop Tim Freyer
